The Great Borough of Tenafly

WHY TENAFLY?
Many urbanites try to stay as connected to the city as possible, yet don’t want to be live in the center of it.
The solution? Tenafly, New Jersey.
A short distance north of the George Washington Bridge, this hilly borough on the Palisades has been popular with people seeking a more suburban setting with large houses and expansive properties, while staying close to the city.
Another bonus is Tenafly’s school system which is consistently rated among New Jersey’s most successful. This rating has made Tenafly a magnet for education-oriented families.
THE HOMES
You may be wondering what the houses are like in the borough of Tenafly. While it does have its historic houses, the recent tendencies has been to knock down the more modest homes built in the middle of the last century and replace them with two-story mansions.
One of Tenafly’s most pressing issues has been recognized as overdevelopment.
THE COMMUTE
Driving is the preferred commuting method, given that Tenafly is five to eight minutes from the George Washington Bridge, via Route 9W or the Palisades Parkway. There is no rail service from Tenafly, although there has been discussion of an area light-rail line. Some commuters take buses — either New Jersey Transit or Coach — or drive to Edgewater Landing for a ferry ride into the city.
WHAT TO DO
Downtown Tenafly has many one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. There is also an art-movie house and a hotel. The borough’s recreation program serves a large percentage of the population consisting of a large soccer program, a golf club and two outdoor swim clubs. Among other outdoor attractions are the Davis Johnson Park and Garden and the Tenafly Nature Center (a 380-acre park that has hiking and cross-country ski trails).
THE SCHOOLS
The schools consistently rank among the top five in the state. The four elementary schools are Mackay, Maugham, Smith and Stillman.
The middle school has an enrollment of 850.
Tenafly High School has over 1,000 students and over 11 Advanced Placement classes.
THE HISTORY
“Tenafly” derives from the Dutch meaning “10 swamps.” By the 19th century much of its land had been cultivated. In 1872 it became part of Palisades Township and in was independently bought in 1894.
